Let’s say you received a speeding ticket. Perhaps you don’t believe you were speeding. You may not want to pay the fine. But regardless, you may also be wondering how much of a risk the ticket comes to your auto insurance. Will your car insurance costs go up as a result of that ticket? They could.
What should you do when you receive such a ticket? Here is some insight.
Ask For Clarification And Proof
It is not common for police officers to pull people over for speeding without proof. This proof comes in the form of a radar detector. If that device notes your speed is above that of the posted speed limit, chances are good you are going to get a ticket. If the police officer does not have this information, you may be able to fight the ticket in court. You may also be able to prove that their equipment is not working properly. For a speeding ticket, though, this may not be worthwhile or possible.
In A Courtroom
When you receive a speeding ticket, you may have the opportunity to appear in court for it. This allows you the opportunity to speak to the judge about the ticket. You may be able to prove you did not commit the offense. Or, you can ask the court to reduce the charges. Sometimes, just for coming to court, the judge may help you reduce the ticket to a lesser offense. Other times, this is not the case.
How Much Will The Ticket Impact You?
You are not likely able to simply have a judge dismiss the ticket. It is more common for you to wind up with the ticket impacting your driver’s license.
If this is your first ticket, it is unlikely it will cause a significant jump in your insurance costs. Indeed, in many cases, insurers do not penalize just one ticket in a given length of time. Many people, however, will see a rise in insurance costs if the ticket was for reckless driving or it was one of several infractions in succession.
You may be able to ask your insurance agent about a strategic driving course. This type of program aims to give you skills and knowledge about how to avoid these types of scenarios. It could help you to reduce the impact of such tickets on your insurance rates.
Insurance companies take speeding tickets seriously. These infractions indicate that a driver may be engaging in reckless behavior. Avoid them whenever possible by driving safely. You may find this is the best way to protect your insurance rates.
